About Lelantine Coastal Wetlands Reserve

Lelantine Coastal Wetlands Reserve is a protected coastal marshland located along the southern coast of Massachusetts. The reserve encompasses a diverse mix of tidal salt marshes, estuarine flats, and freshwater wetlands that provide critical habitat for numerous species of migratory birds, fish, and native plants. Its coastal location along Buzzards Bay plays a vital role in water filtration, flood protection, and carbon sequestration. The reserve's flat, open terrain includes extensive boardwalk trails and observation platforms that invite visitors to experience diverse ecological zones without disturbing wildlife. Historically, the area was used for salt hay farming and small-scale shellfish harvest, but conservation efforts have restored much of the natural habitat since its establishment in the late 20th century. Recreational activities at Lelantine include birdwatching—especially during spring and fall migrations—as well as kayaking, photography, and guided nature tours. Notable landmarks include the Salt Marsh Overlook and the Estuary Education Center, which serves as an interpretive hub for visitors and researchers alike. The reserve appeals to outdoor enthusiasts, families, and scientists interested in coastal ecology and wetland conservation, offering a serene and educational outdoor experience.
